Roof Care: How to Prolong the Life of a Roof

All roof systems need regular maintenance to stay tough against the elements. Regardless of the type, maintenance saves a roof from early damage or quick deterioration. Each type of roof has a different functional life and you can maximize or even prolong it with proper maintenance. Here are some roof maintenance tips you can apply.

Gutter Cleanup

While the gutter is separate from the roof, unlike other components of the structure, it plays a major role in keeping the dangers of leak at bay. However, if not given proper attention during inspection and repair, it might do the direct opposite, which is to allow water to seep into the house. Dirt and debris that block the water passage can cause the water to back up into the house and damage the roof’s substrate.

Coating

Not all roofs need coating, but for metal roofs, paint is vital for their durability. The coating serves as a shield against moisture that triggers rust-forming oxidation. With the right coating, the metal roof can even increase its heat resistance, which then prevent contraction and expansion that alters the roof’s metal makeup.

Roof Surface Cleaning

If there are trees around your house, chances are leaves might have been falling or being blown on your roof regularly. Although you cannot stop it unless the trees are removed, you can just perform regular cleanup to eliminate those leaves. The leaves of a tree are organic material that can invite destructive molds as they rot on your roof.
